Pre-requisite: All attendees must have completed the SAFE 2-day Training.
Struggling with how to approach mitigation in your SAFE home studies? You’re not alone, and this one-hour webinar is designed to help. Whether you’re brand new to SAFE or have been doing it for years, this session offers a focused, in-depth look at the mitigation process, including clear examples that bring it to life. While the 2-day training introduces the concept of mitigation, this webinar offers the opportunity to take a deeper dive. It slows things down to focus on practical strategies, real examples, and tools to strengthen your approach.
While each webinar can be taken on its own, we strongly recommend taking both for a more complete understanding of the SAFE process. The Mitigation webinar helps you understand how to assess and assign mitigation ratings, while the Narration webinar builds on that foundation by showing how to write about those ratings clearly and effectively. Together, they offer practical guidance for both new and seasoned practitioners. For the best learning experience, we suggest taking the Mitigation webinar first.
Learning Objectives
- Clarify the difference between SAFE Desk Guide ratings and Mitigation ratings, including when and why a Mitigation rating is applied.
- Identify and apply the three Mitigation rating options—Sustain, Reduce, or Erase—based on the applicant’s current functioning.
- Evaluate and select appropriate sources of outside evidence to support a Reduced or Erased mitigation rating.
- Recognize common misconceptions in assigning Mitigation ratings and learn how to address them with confidence.
- Strengthen documentation skills by using structured tools like the Mitigation Tip Sheet and optional worksheet to guide Mitigation decisions.

Perfect for both new and experienced practitioners.
